LIFEMASTERS DEBUTS FIRST INTERNET-BASED INTERACTIVE MEDICAL-MONITORING SYSTEM

-- Individuals with Chronic Diseases Monitored at Home Via the Internet --
-- 90 Million Have Chronic Diseases in the U.S. --

NEW YORK (October 12, 1999) - LifeMasters®, a leading provider of health management services, today launched the first interactive disease management program for those with ongoing medical conditions. The service was unveiled to the public for the first time at Intel’s Internet Health Day II in New York City.

Available at www.LifeMasters Online.com, individuals with diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and hypertension can gain direct access to patient education, vital sign monitoring and support via a personalized Internet site on their PC. The company has also announced that the service will be available through a strategic partnership with TheHealthNetwork.com, a leading health portal, before the end of the month.

"While consumers have long had access to health information online, this represents the first time that patients can receive interactive monitoring of their chronic diseases via the Internet," said Christobel E. Selecky, CEO of LifeMasters.

The free service is modeled after Lifemasters' existing medical-monitoring programs, which until now have only been available through health-management organizations.

"LifeMasters’ peer-reviewed studies prove that patients who are taught health-management techniques, including vital-sign monitoring, enjoy improved clinical outcomes," Selecky continued. "LifeMasters Online is available directly to the consumer. Now, not only can physicians enroll their patients, but individuals can initiate the program for themselves and their loved ones."

Users enter their vital signs and symptoms into the LifeMasters Online password-protected database. The application then provides personalized feedback on users’ health status based upon established clinical guidelines for managing chronic conditions.

A personalized portfolio of customizable features includes coaching emails, health tips and reminders, a health diary, a health data archive and an easily accessible emergency medical record. All are tailored to subscribers’ specific requirements.

For an optional fee, a LifeMasters Online nurse will regularly call users to monitor progress and notify their physicians whenever physician-directed treatment is required. Communication between nurses and the physicians’ offices facilitates data exchange. Optional LifeMasters Online Exception Reports connect physicians with accurate and timely decision support to avert hospitalizations and utilization for the chronically ill.

Patients without computers can access the company’s interactive voice response system using a touch-tone telephone to record their vital signs.

The LifeMasters application has been fully operational during two twelve-month trials, successfully serving more than 100 participants. The second study was underwritten by Intel and sponsored by Lifemasters and Physicians Medical Group (PMG) of Santa Cruz County, California.

"With continually updated information from patients, we’re heading off unnecessary visits to the hospital," said PMG’s Medical Director, Les Cordes, M.D. "The bottom line is improved care and decreased costs for both doctors and patients."
